This is the first of four original portraits in pastel that I am creating for each of Jean Elizabeth Mallette's children. These were commissioned by her son Russell Mallette and after meeting with my subject a few times and photographing her in her space and light, I began creating the images of her that I felt best suited her personality. This pastel portrait was painting on canson twilight colored archival paper and I used Terry Ludwig Darks to bring my value to it's deepest and most intense value in order to obtain a good full range of values, intensities and colors. Her shawl is a beautifully designed and colored piece of art in itself and was purchased by me at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Store in NYC. The light is by a window and her expression reminded me of the expression of Eleanor Roosevelt but with a greater tenderness and sensivity. I will post each of Jean Elizabeth's portraits as I complete them. Loving the project!
